Are Supplements Worth The Money? 💊🌿

To supplement or not to supplement...

That is the question! Surveys regularly show that more than 50% of American adults take herbal and dietary supplements. Yet, we frequently see claims in the media that supplements are just expensive urine.

So we’re here to answer the question...

Are supplements worth the money?

The answer? It depends! If you’re buying high-quality supplements from reliable brands, and you’ve done a full work up to ensure you need them, then yes, you’re probably getting your money’s worth. However, if you’re just taking an over-the-counter supplement from a supermarket or grocery store, or following the advice of a conventional doctor who isn’t trained in nutrition or supplementation, you might be getting more fillers than bioavailable nutrients, which results in expensive urine.

Ask yourself these questions before buying supplements:

1. Are you working with a functional nutrition professional?

Many conventional health practitioners are not properly trained on dietary supplements, and may recommend brands that aren’t tested for purity, or might recommend supplements before considering lifestyle and dietary changes.

Functional nutrition practitioners like those at Juno Wellness are trained with a food first approach and will only use supplements after confirming that the client or patient is a good candidate for the supplement.

2. Is the supplement made up of whole food vitamins and bioavailable minerals, or synthetic nutrients?

If you can’t get nutrients from food, the next best option is usually to get it from whole food vitamins and minerals - so choose supplements that actually contain whole foods, processed into a powder, pill, or liquid.

We recommend avoiding synthetic supplements as much as possible - so stay away from forms like folic acid (B9), and look for whole food vitamins and minerals instead!

3. Are the supplements third-party verified or practitioner-recommended?

Supplements are not actually regulated, not even by the FDA. They are expected to follow some specific guidelines, but there is no verification process to ensure that they’re following those guidelines or that they actually contain the products they claim.

For this reason, most health practitioners don’t recommend your standard over-the-counter supplements found at grocery stores and pharmacies.

Instead, we look for purity certifications and third party testing.
