Are supplements worth the money?

The answer? It depends! If you’re buying high-quality supplements from reliable brands, and you’ve done a full work up to ensure you need them, then yes, you’re probably getting your money’s worth. However, if you’re just taking an over-the-counter supplement from a supermarket or grocery store, or following the advice of a conventional doctor who isn’t trained in nutrition or supplementation, you might be getting more fillers than bioavailable nutrients, which results in expensive urine.

Ask yourself these questions before buying supplements: 


1. Are you working with a functional nutrition professional? 


Many conventional health practitioners are not properly trained on dietary supplements, and may recommend brands that aren’t tested for purity, or might recommend supplements before considering lifestyle and dietary changes.

2. Is the supplement made up of whole food vitamins and bioavailable minerals, or synthetic nutrients?

Apple and beet quinoa salad

Servings: 2

Cooking time: 25 min

Ingredients:

1/4 cup Quinoa (uncooked)

1/2 Apple (julienned)

1 Beet (small, peeled, grated)

1 Carrot (small, peeled, grated)

1/2 cup Kale Leaves (chopped)

2 2/3 tbsps Dried Unsweetened Cranberries

2 tbsps Orange Juice

1 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar

1 1/2 tsps Dijon Mustard

1 tbsp Hemp Seeds

1/4 tsp Sea Salt

Directions:

Cook the quinoa according to package directions. Once it has finished cooking, set it aside to cool. Combine the cooled quinoa and all remaining ingredients in a large bowl and mix until well combined. Divide evenly between plates and enjoy!
